Top Ten Tag Teams (1985-1990)

As a child I would always have to hide from my mom whenever wrestling was on. She would run to whatever room I was in and turn it off. To my mom it was as bad as scrambled porn… maybe worse. So this list is a dedication to all the nervous nights I spent anxiously hiding from my mother. This is my Top Ten WWF Tag Teams of the 90’s.

10. The British Bulldogs

When you think of the British Bulldogs you think of Davey Boy Smith with his flamboyant bicep things that made you want to kill him. It also hurt his street cred that he was from Britain. But he did play a good clean-cut asswhipe that the crowd loved to hate.

9. Harlem Heat

Like the Bulldogs the Heat were represented by one man Booker T and whoever else was on his arm. This team set the record with ten titles. It also helps to wrestle for nine hundred years. I think Booker T is still chugging along in Mexico somewhere.

8. Money INC

Made up of legendary wrestler Ted DiBiase and resident douche Irwin R. Schyster (IRS). I always got made fun for liking these two by my friends but I was so impressed by IRS’ ability to where a tie and still stomp ass.

7. The Dudley Boyz

Easily the funniest combination of all time. Whenever you add a redneck racist and black dude it equals gold. They were the first blue collar TV before it got all-queer with Jeff Foxworthy. This team made wrestling enjoyable with a slight hint of racial awkwardness.

6. New Age Outlaws

Made up of Kip and BG James, these two dominated the sport for a while and eventually added the likes of many of the D-Generation X crew. At one point they were the third most popular people in wrestling behind the Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin. Plus look at those tight shorts, how cant you root for that.

5. The Nasty Boys

Simply put Brian Knobbs and Jerry Sags were fat and wore leather… You can’t go wrong with that combo.

4. Demolition

Made up of the three-way combo of Ax, Smash and Crush, this dynamic combination destroyed anyone that got in their way. Plus they wore face paint, which is only cool at a carnival and in the wrestling ring.

3. The Hart Foundation

Probably the most classic and well respected wrestler was Bret Hart. He teamed up with Jim Neidhart to form one of the best tag teams in the history of the WWF. They had it all, athleticism, size and sweet accents. They rocked as hard as men in leotards can.

2. The Steiner Brothers

When these two came out in their Michigan letterman jackets and their ear guards, my friends and I would loose it. Not because we like Michigan (hate them) but because they were a real combination of brothers that gave it their best and were two solid dudes that the crowd could relate to.

1. The Road Warriors/The Legion of Doom

Members: Hawk and Animal
They had spikes in their shoulder pads… is there anything else I need to say?

HOW CAN YOU LEAVE OFF THE HARDYS, AND EDGE AND CHRISTIAN. TABLES/LADDERS/CHAIRS. ENOUGH SAID. MIDNIGHT ROCKERS, MIDNIGHT EXPRESS, AUSTIN TEXAS

Anonymous said...

Couple of problems, THe Brittish Bulldogs didn't wrestle in the 90's and the Road Warriors were has-beens by 1992. You should have called this best tag teams ever.

Anonymous said...

No Bushwackers?

Anonymous said...

Boy...you have smoked yourself retarded to leave off the Outsiders and their 3 move arsenal, but very entertaining yapping on the stick.

Hardy's and Edge was more of the new era of wrestling. Hart Foundation should have been higher, and the Demolition-Hart Foundation SummerSlam match in 1990 was classic

O.K., they were made of four men, not two, but what about the Four Horsemen? Which were, in case your young ass can't remember: The Nature Boy Ric Flair, The Enforcer Arn Anderson, Ole Anderson and last but certainly not least, Tully Blanchard. These four guys were mean some-bitches as a group, as two or just on their own.

Scott said...

It says Top Ten WWF teams - The Horsemen, outsiders, midnight express, rock & roll express - all NWA/WCW teams

Anonymous said...

Not sure if it was the 80's or 90's, but what about The Rockers?

Anonymous said...

what about too cool? they were the best...and even had the hype man rikishi!

Freddy the Mercenary said...

And since that last group I mentioned was actually a faction more than a tag team, what about the entire Adkisson family, better known as the Von Erich's, Texas' favorite sons?

Kevin, David, Kerry, Mike and Chris Von Erich, though not really a tag team all the time, is the strongest wrestling family ever in the ring.

Come on Zdubs, really, hoe do these guys not make your list?

Freddy the Mercenary said...

Scott, those guys were NXA/WCW tag teams at one time, but they made it to the WWF/WWE whatever we're calling it today.

The Dudleys started in ECW, why'd they make his list then if we're sticking to your comment.

New Age Outlaws, WCW.

Booker T wrestles in TNA "suckaaaa" , not Mexico.

Anonymous said...

New Age Outlaws were WWF....and if you're not down with that....I got twoooo worrrds for ya

How the hell can you leave off Marty Jeanetty and Sean Michaels? The Rockers were the shit. When Michaels put Marty's head through that glass window of the barber shop set a piece of me died. LOL

I always loved the Acolytes. Whenever they'd do their Acolyte Protection Agency skit I would buckle over in laughter.

Hugging Harold Reynolds said...

No ECW love? The Eliminators, The Public Enemy, Taz/Sabu, Sabu/RVD, The Pitbulls

What about the Rock and Sock Connection. Mick Foley and the Rock may not have been tag team specialists, but they did make a great team.

I agree with one of the early posters, you should have just called this best tag teams ever instead of best WWF tag teams of the 90s. Harlem Heat was never a WWF tag team, strictly WCW. The Dudley Boyz were barely in the WWF in that decade, joining it in mid-99. The British Bulldogs were broken up by 90. The Hart Foundation you reference (Jim Neidhart/Bret Hart) broke up soon after that (though they did rejoin the larger stable at various points). Demolition didn't last much longer either, breaking up in 91 (and their glory days were in the 80s). You really should have looked up the activity of these teams before you qualified it with such a limiting title.

Thank you for all ur corrections... as you can see my memory has slipped since the days of my childhood... im glad i could get your pulses pumping though... I will change the title for you boys to make more sense... thanks

First and foremost, you CANNOT leave The Outsiders out of this conversation. Nobody's had more title reigns than the Dudleys. I'd put them higher. Demolition, Money Inc, Bulldogs, and the Hart Foundation were mostly irrelevant after 1992. The Nasty Boys seriously sucked out loud, and the Steiners were completely intolerable on the microphone. In my opinion... If we're only talking about the 90's:
10. Public Enemy
9. APA
8. The Pitbulls
7. Legion of Doom
6. Impact Players
5. New Age Outlaws
4. Steiner Brothers
3. Harlem Heat
2. The Dudley Boys
1. The Outsiders

Zach Martin said...

To be honest i just didnt like the outsiders... they pissed me off... but i will agree they were legendary

This thread is useless without the Young Stallions.

Rock N Roll Express forever, entering the ring to ELO "Wham-a-lama-bama-lama rock 'n' roll is king"

Tim said...

Too cool...that's good stuff. But seriously, the Hardys and E&C are two TT's that need to be up there. Also what about Rock and Sock or X-pac and Kane. That's back in WWF's hay-day, when there were always pulling 6.5+ Nelsons.

Zach Martin said...

I can't believe tim just brought up ratings... true fans are there for there team, when its good or bad and these are the legendary teams that I grew up with that i loved

Anonymous said...

How can you not have the Brothers of Destruction on there. Taker and Kane!

The Hater said...

seriously... a lot of these tag teams weren't even WWF. Harlem Heat for example.

If you were going to do everything under the WWE umbrella...

Outsiders
Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard
Freebirds- THEY HAVE A RULE NAMED AFTER THEM

Rock n' Roll Express
Midnight Express- http://backstagepowers.com/site/video/road-warriors-vs.-midnight-express.html
Heavenly Bodies
Rockers
Headshrinkers

Barry Windahm and Mike Rotunda...The US Express?

Tito Santana and Rick Martel...The Flying Burritos?

Anonymous said...

Ummm... the KILLER BEES????

Anonymous said...

I have to admit I was thinking The Rockers would be on there. They were dynamic and entertaining. Oh well, maybe myself and all the others that have asked where they are do not see it the same way as you.

Zach Martin said...

Did anyone mention The Lords of Pain (Warlord and the Barbarian). They were LOD wannabes.

Anonymous said...

The Colossel Connection (Haku and the late great Andre the Giant)

Anonymous said...

I don't think they ever won a match in WWF history but the Conquistadors #1 and #2 jobbed to just about ever tag team there was in the 80s

Anonymous said...

The Orient Express (Sato and Tanaka)

Anonymous said...

HOW THE HELL DO YOU LEAVE OUT THE BUSHWACKERS!!?!?!?!

Anonymous said...

The Fabalous Rougeau Brothers...

Anonymous said...

How about The Dream Team (Brutus the Barber Beefcake and Greg Valentine). They were one of the first big-time tag team partners of the WWF.

Anonymous said...

First off, Harlem Heat was Booker T and his brother(real brother) Stevie Ray, not "whoever was on his arm".

Second, anyone who leaves off the list the team of Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard is clueless.

Money Inc and New Age Outlaws? You got to be kidding. The list was best tag teams, not best cartoons.

First of all it's good to see some old school fans who truely appriciate the sport of professional wrestling and not this sports entertainment bullsh_t that is shoved down our throats every monday, tuesday and friday.

Okay all you that have commented, why call this list the greatest tag teams ever list when you don't mention the names of the Funk, Briscoes, The Andersons, Gordy and Williams, The Grahams, The Dream Team, Freebirds, Midnight Express, Heavenly Bodies, Flair and Valentine????

Seriously, can we ID half of the responders...I'm sure that a majority are under the age of 23 and love what was forced to them. Edge/Christian (who I like as singles, but never as a tag)??? Hardys(Who I wouldnt waste a breath to save their life)???? But most importantly someone said Taker/Kane??? Are you serious??? They're nothing but a sideshow to get a cheap pop, people know them more for their singles credentials than as a "tag team". More people can tell you how many Mania wins Taker has then who all has the "Brothers of Disfunction" beaten.

Most of you are a product of Vince McMahon's new generation fans (Which I'm deeply sorry). Many of you root so hard for who is being pushed for us to like cause that's what "they" (or "He" I guess I could say) want us to like. How dare you put guys of the modern era in front of those who made tag team wrestling what it is! Besides McMahon in the late 90's and early 2000's throwing the tag team belts around like a bad case of the clap, name one reason why you like E&C Kane/Taker, the Hardy's or any other fairly recent team besides "they r cool!!!" and "jeff iz awhsum". Look at who paved the way for them before you write things like "outsidas rulz" and "E&C rocks!".

You wouldn't have your Hardy's, Outsiders, Harlem Heats, Viscous and Delicious (yes I went that far), The APA, Billy and Chuck, Dudleys, Public Enemy, RVD/Sabu, Kroniks, Candido and Storm, Outsiders, Dudes With Attitudes, Headshrinkers, Jacob and Eli Blu, Impact Players, Eliminators, Cade and Murdoch, London and Kendrick, Natural Born THrillers, Pitbulls, Kane/Takers, E&C, Rock n Sock Connection just to name a few had it not been for Jack and Gerry Brisco, The Graham Brothers, The Von Erichs, Fabolous Freebirds, Midnight Express, Wild Samoans, The British Bulldogs, The Hart Foundation, Road Warriors, The Hart Brothers (Who were at tag team in Stampede Wrestling), The Blackjacks, The Valients, Rocky Johnson/Tony Atlas, Rotundo/Windham, Doom, Rhodes/Murdoch, Wahoo and Youngblood, The Kolofs, Rose and Somers, The East/West Connection (Ventura and Adonis)!

Take alook at some of those names and tell me that in the wrestling you see today there isn't some form of these guys.

Sorry for the rant, but as a professional wrestling fan all my life, it annoys me today to see many that only think that wrestling has existed since the "attiude" era and that only those of that product are worthy of being the best.

so where are the rockers, the sheep herders, the raging bull's, rock 'n' roll express, the power of pain, undertaker and kane ect, ect
